This is such a common DIY project on the Internet, that I hesitate to even blog about it, but since this is one of things that I have been doing this week so I thought "Why Not?" This recipe goes by several different names "Vicks Vapor Shower Discs". "Shower Soothers", and so on, but the premise is the same...to clear the boogers out of your nose and to ease chest congestion when you have a cold or flu.
Shirley's Notes:
- Since this project involves a gel based product, it may not be suitable for all sewer systems and piping. If you are concerned about the grease in the medicated gel clogging up either one of those, you can substitute the medicated gel with eucalyptus oil and mint oil.
- Trying to get the smell out of the mixing bowel, measuring cup, etc., can be time consuming sometimes. I found the easiest way is just to make a paste using baking soda and water to wash the dishes out. That usually removes the scent right away.
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/3 - 1/2 cup water
- 2 -3 teaspoons of medicated vapo gel (Vicks Vapor Rub is one name brand for this)
- measuring spoon
- stirring spoon
- measuring cup
- muffin pan
- paper cups
- saucepan.
- Mixing bowl (or you can just skip the bowl and mix the ingredients in your saucepan)
- Place 1/3 cup of water and medicated gel into saucepan and place onto stove. Warm the water just enough to melt the get and then remove the pan from stove.
- Combine water/gel mixture with the baking soda and cornstarch, mixing well into thick paste. You can add more water if needed.
- Put paper cups into muffin pan and fill each cup about 1/2 full.
- Using a glass bottom covered with a plastic bag, lightly tap down on mixture to compress it together.
- Allow mixture to sit overnight until disks are hard
- Store in an air tight container
Put disks in the bottom of shower where the water hits the floor. Use hot water to melt the disk
