Blog Update

Just a quick post today to let you know about some new things that either has already happened, or will be happening soon on my blog. I hope that you will enjoy the new additions. If you have any suggestions of things that you would like to see, please let me know either by commenting on this post or email me at webshirley2012@gmail.com.

Self-Defense:
I am currently working with a couple of our local law enforcement departments and also a martial arts expert to design a series on self-defense ideas for those of us that aren't...well...not as physically young as what we used to be. While I know there are tons of stuff online about self-defense, they are usually geared for the younger people. I happen to believe that everyone has the right to know how to defend themselves and that just because they may not be as mobile as others may be, they can still do things to protect themselves from harm or even the threat of death and be successful at it. This will be geared towards the “middle age” and the “middle age plus” group. It will be an ongoing series that will include both newer ideas as well as links to self-defense articles and videos that are already online. I hope to start this series in the next couple of weeks.

Current Projects:
On the right hand side of my blog, (you will need to scroll down a bit) will be an ongoing project that I am currently working on. Right now, it is a “First Two Hours Kit.” This is a go-to-kit that I am making up for immediately after some kind of an emergency has happened. It will be made up of things that will be needed right after some sort of emergency but the emergency isn't so bad that we need to leave the house. So, instead of having a flashlight in one room, first-aid kit in another, and candles/matches still in another place, there will be enough of those things in one place so I don't have to think “now where did I put that and that and that?” That will give us “breathing room” from the emergency so we can have time to access the situation and figure out what should (if anything) be done. Items will be added to this list as time goes on. Once the project is finished, I will be doing a post with pictures about it.

Upcycling:
I will be starting a new section on how to reuse old items such as cardboard cup carriers into every day practical items.

  1. Awesome!! I'm looking forward to your self defense series. When I watch some of this stuff online I think "Yeah right." Good to know some one thinks that we are worth saving too and not just the young people.

  2. I hope that you will touch on self defense for the disabled. Im so tired of hearing how only the physically fit can survive any kind of a threat and the rest of us are all going to just die. When I hear that it makes me feel like my life isn't worth living. I served this country for 12 years and lost both of my legs because of it.

    1. First I want to thank you for your service to our country. We, as a country, will always be in your debt. Your life is worth living and those whom claim is or isn't going to live during some kind of crisis...well...I'm not wanting to be unkind, but quite frankly they are only guessing at best. Don't listen to them on that. I am no expert (and neither are they btw) but I think they are wrong.

  4. Don't kid me like that. You mean us old fatties might actually have a chance to be able to defend ourselves and we don't have tho just die? Honestly I watched a couple of videos the other day online that actually said that. It had me so discouraged that I gave up prepping. Maybe i should think about that again if there is some hope that i could live.

    1. I **won't** be discussing guns,(which is a very good thing since everything that I know about guns would fit on a point of a pin) but I will say this much...I fail to see how those that say "fatties" will be the first to die can say that with a straight face. I guess that they aren't able to comprehend the fact that a bullet coming out of the end of a gun held by an overweight person is just as lethal and deadly as a bullet coming out a gun held by a skinny person. Don't give up!!! And don't be discouraged. Hang in there and prove to them that they are wrong. Thank you for your comment and for visiting my blog.

  5. You might also may want to talk to other professionals that work with the handicap annex elderly. Sometimes what sounds good on paper to others doesn't translate into real life very well.

  8. I can understand what others are saying. It would be easier to defend yourself if you are physically fit, but that doesn't mean that there are any guarantees that they will. Just that they will and I think that is webshirley2012 is saying while trying to help the rest of us.

    1. Exactly!!! They are 100% correct when they say we should get in shape...I am only meaning to try to address the needs of those who, for whatever reason, cannot be trained as they suggest. Will I be able to do it perfect? No way!! That is why I am bringing professionals in to help me with this one. No doubt, that I will have a lot of people disagree with me that this possible but I feel like everyone has the right to live, that **ALL** life is precious and that their demise is NOT "collateral damage" or should be taken so lightly.
